5 Things That Can Sabotage Your New Employee

Sabotage New Employee

Immediately setting the tone with your new employee is crucial. Setting a new hire's course is a lot like the space shuttle: most of the energy goes into getting them off the ground or "up and running." Once their course is set, it takes a lot of time and energy to change the new employee's direction.

Here are five things that set the wrong course and can sabotage your new employee from the start.

  1. Be overly friendly. This person was hired to work. He or she will most likely build strong relationships over time with his or her coworkers, but don't give too much too soon. Be polite and friendly, but you must require the new employee to earn his or her way into the "family" with hard work and accomplishments.
  2. Hesitate to correct mistakes. It may seem harsh to correct a new employee who is nervous, but if you don't you are only hurting everyone: the company, the new employee, and even yourself. It's OK to be demanding. Bad habits are best avoided altogether. Correct new employees on mistakes and don't procrastinate. Immediately is not too soon to give feedback.
  3. Fail to set tangible goals right away. Employees should be expected to contribute to at least one tangible business result on day one. This sets the tone that output is most important and gives the employee a sense of accomplishment. Too much time spent in orientation just makes the transition to work that much harder.
  4. Allow them to modify processes. This is not the time for new employees to revamp the efficiency of every function. Let them know their ideas are welcome after they have mastered the current processes.
  5. Talk about empowerment. Empowerment is not a right; it is a privilege that is earned over time. Make new employees earn additional authority and latitude with proven accountability and responsibility. Earned empowerment is the best and only culture worth having.
