Are you really “coaching” your employees?

Coaching Employees

There are three types of management styles: Directing, Coaching, and Delegating. Each leader naturally gravitates towards one of those styles. “Coaching” is a big buzz word and for good reason, as the Coaching management style can apply in a variety of leadership situations. This is especially true with the younger generation.

Being a coach, however, is not easy. While managers identify Coaching as their preferred management style, the actions that follow may be Directing or Delegating.

What is Coaching?

Coaching is working alongside an employee to get the desired outcome. It is two-way communication and interaction, requiring initiative from the employee and the broader skills and experienced judgment of the manager.

Coaching is:

  • Being present and actively involved
  • Setting and monitoring direction
  • Encouraging employees to initiate

Coaching is not:

  • Telling employees how you expect them to do the task
  • Giving specific instruction and direction as the job is being done
  • Being unavailable while the task is being completed

How do I know when to be a Coach?

It’s important to understand that while Coaching can be implemented in many circumstances, it may not be the most effective style with some direct reports and in certain contexts, where a Directing or Delegating management style would be more appropriate.

Use Coaching when:

  • The employees have strong work ethic but limited experience
  • The need to develop leaders is critical to the success of the company
  • Success is enhanced by the insights of many
The best way to coach your employees is to first understand what management style you lean towards, and then understand which style is best in each situation.
