Onboarding: Acquainting New Hires with the Company

Mar 24, 2015

The onboarding process is an integral part of attracting and retaining talent. Onboarding is about managing new employees in their transitional time into your community and company culture. This strategic process can improve the effectiveness of your current talent management systems. Adjusting new employees into the social and performance aspects of your organization will assist in creating a smooth and quick transition. According to the SHRM Foundation, more than 25 percent of the working population makes career transitions in just a year. With this in mind, onboarding should be a top priority for HR departments. Onboarding strategies can range from very formal to very casual, but there are some key things to consider in maintaining a successful process.

According to Forbes, there are a few things to include for successful onboarding:

  • A team-building focus: bring all teams together to reaffirm the company's culture and goals
  • Make it personal: here is a great chance to get to know more about the employee than was possible during the interview. Also, take the opportunity to give each new hire a mentor—getting them acclimated quicker.
  • Reinforce employer brand: if you make it look like your company is a cool place to work, make sure that feeling is in your onboarding process.
  • Invite your employee to use his or her personal brand: be thoughtful about this—it may not be appropriate for all companies.
  • Audit your onboarding process with check-ins: make sure your new hire is on a good path; don't make onboarding just something to check off your list.

Throughout new hire orientation and employee training, make sure your new hire never feels alone or segregated from the rest of the company. Making the employee feel at home will help in his or her transitions and with creating a new brand advocate. You only get one chance to effectively integrate a new employee in well, so take the process of acquainting him or her very seriously. The faster a new employee feels like a part of the family and prepared for his or her position, the faster the employee will successfully contribute to the company's goals.
